What is DiscoverMachine for?
DiscoverMachine lets you create and share maps. Here are some fun examples:
- Map your recent hiking trip by importing your GPS data, then share it with your friends
- Create a map of your favorite restaurants and use it to figure out where you and your co-workers should go for lunch
- Build a map of your cross-country road trip
- Keep track of places you want to visit, and those you already have
- Map your potential real estate purchases and link to their listings
- ...and many more!
How do I create a map?
Creating a map is easy. Just follow these steps:
- Click the 'create a map' link at the top of the page.
- Log in, or register for a new account (it's free!).
- You now have an empty map ready for your customization!
- The first thing you should do is decide where you want your map to start. Just scroll and zoom the map where you want, then click the 'set this as the starting map location' link below the map. When visitors view your map, it will start from this point.
- Next, edit the title and description by clicking on them.
- You can now add waypoints, or markers, on the map. Just click the 'add waypoint' link below the map. You can then pick a location, name your waypoint, add a description, and upload a photo.
- Now, share your map with your friends! The URL of your map is found to the right of the map title.
How do I import GPS data?
DiscoverMachine allows you to import
GPX data files generated by your GPS. These files can contain waypoints and track logs.
First, download the data from your GPS into the mapping program you use with your GPS. If you are using a Garmin GPS, you would import into MapSource.
Next, export the data in GPX format. In Garmin MapSource you can Save As and select GPX as the format.
Now you can click the 'upload GPS data' link under your DiscoverMachine map and upload the file.
Tip: When I upload data from my Garmin GPS, I first edit it in MapSource and remove any waypoints and tracks that I'm not interested in. An easy way to do this is to drag and select the area you're interested in, then go to the Edit menu and select Copy. Next, go to File and make a new map. Now you can Paste your data onto the empty map and export it as GPX.
